Shopping for Hunting and Camping Gear at the Dollar Store

Normaly I shop for hunting and camping gear either at Walmart, the local Bass Pro Shopps, or online. Sometimes though it pays to look in unconventional places. Last week I took my daughters to the dollar store to buy some coloring books. While I was there  kept on seenig things I could use for hunting. So, I came back and did some shopping for hunting supplies. For less than $20 I came back with quite a haul.

Not everything I got was a great deal, but everything would have cost the same or more at the bigger stores. This is what I got:

  • A Pot
  • A Skillet
  • Zip Lock bags
  • Matches
  • Poultry sissors
  • Can opener
  • Glasses repair kit
  • Cotton Balls
  • Vasiline
  • Salt and pepper shakers
  • 3 cups of soup
  • 2 cans of viena sausages
  • A can of stew
  • Emergency candles
  • Snickers bars
  • Cheese crackers
  • Jar of pears
  • A pasta meal
  • A plastic container

I probaby could have gotten the food for the same price anywhere. I believe I have enough here to last through the first part of the season. The plastic box fits perfectly in my truck box. I am storing this food in my truck box so I won't forget, or eat it. Total cost: $8

The vasiline and cotton balls are for making fire starters. I have read online that cotton balls soaked in vasiline make great fre starters. I wanted to try them out. The emergency candles were a great deal. These last almost 6 hours each. A candle is a great way to light wet wood, and it alone can keep you surprisingly warm. I can make hundreds of fires from these simple supplies. Cost: $4

The cheapest mess kit I can find is $7 and it sucks. For $2 I got a pot and skillet that has a non-stick coating and is plenty good enough for the simple meals I make in the field. Ziploc bags have hundreds uses, from storing a sandwich to cooking an egg. The poultry sissors are great for cleaning birds and the can opener is for obvious reasons. Cost: $5

There was much more I could have gotten that I didn't need. They have tons of first aid supplies, cooking equipment, junk food (including jerky), and tools. Next time you need some simple camping or huntng supplies check out the dollar store, you might be surprised!
