DIY Survival Bracelet

A while ago I mentioned that I had discovered a cool way to carry a little paracord with you; a survival bracelet. I purchased one, but was disappointed that it did not fit well. They looked easy to make so I said I would try and make one and post my results.

Here it is!

I discovered that they are very easy to make. There are tons of web sites that will show you how to do this. I was just going to post some links to other tutorials, but I am stuck at home riding out a hurricane, so I decided to make my own.

You need the following things:

• About 8 feet of paracord
• Small clasp
• Knife or scissors
• Lighter
• Some Thread

You can also get all of these things at a local craft store. Lets start!

First find the middle of your 8 foot piece of paracord.

Loop the midpoint of the paracord through one of the sections of the clasp.

Wrap the paracord around your wrist to measure how long the bracelet needs to be. Tie a string at the point you want the second half of the clasp to go.

Pull the two strands through the second half of the clasp until you hit the string you tied to mark the bracelets proper length.

The Next few steps are easy to do, but hard to describe. I'm just going to let the pictures do the talking.

Continue making the above knot until you reach the end of the bracelet.

Feed the ends through the loop that is holding the clasp.

Cut the access paracord close to the loop.

Melt the ends of the paracord. This keeps the paracord from unraveling and your knots from untying.

You can't tell because of the camera flash, but the butane lighter is lit.

 Your done!

A bracelet is just the beginning of what you can make with this technique. I made a hat band that contains about 20 feet of paracord. I've seen belts, dog collars, game carriers, and duck call lanyards made like this. It is a useful skill!
